
Allen Jay Jinnette 83, of 5647 N. Church St., died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2000, at Moses Cone Hospital.
A graveside service was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday Feb. 16, 2000, in Guilford Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Dan P. Stowe Sr. and the Rev. Marion Moore.
Mr. Jinnette was born Aug. 3, 1916, in Johnston County, to John Carson and Lillian Outland Jinnette. He graduated from Bessemer High School and Guilford College.
Mr. Jinnette served in the U.S. Army Air Corp. He was assigned to the Medical Corp in Italy during World War II. He retired front Burlington Industries after 43 years of service. He was senior chemist and was lovingly referred to as "The Professor" because he constantly shared his wealth of knowledge with everyone he met. He held several patents dealing with the finishing of fiberglass fabrics.
He served on the school boards of Summerfield and Northwest High School. He was a member of Gethsemane United Methodist Church, where he had been a Cub Scout Leader, Sunday school teacher, choir member, church lay leader and president of the United Methodist Men. He had also been an instructor at GTCC and Alamance Community College. Mr. Jinnette was an avid gardener and member of the American Iris Society. He was named "Father of the Year" in 1966, by the Greensboro Merchants Association. His favorite hobbies were reading, painting, landscapes, cooking and traveling.
"The Professor" touched many lives and will be missed by all.
Survivors are his wife, Evelyn Hartsoe Jinnette of the home; daughters, Susan Jinnette Perkins of Cary, Nancy Jinnette Ellington of Greensboro, Judy Jinnette Eshaghi of the home; sons, John Preston Jinnette of Corpus Christi, Texas, Henry Jay Jinnette of Greensboro, William Allen Jinnette of Greenville, James Carson Jinnette of Greensboro, Richard Thomas Jinnette of Greensboro, Edward Lee Jinnette of the home; sisters, Dorothy Slaughter of Greensboro, Esther Tilley of Greensboro, Ina Brower of Greensboro, Margie Barrow of Myrtle Beach, SC.; 13 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
