Graveside

He lived long but not forever, called home at 83;
Leaving many sons and daughters, scores of friends and family.
Every eye damp and swollen, amongst a deluge of tears;
Lain before them a man, cherished soul of golden years.
A flag upon his casket, shroud of Glory - Stars and Stripes;
For service to his country, long ago, saving lives.
A nearby train rumbles by, as the service goes on;
Like this a man lived his life, held to tracks of his own.
The cool air in the sun, gentle winds rustled the flowers;
The canopy waved in the breeze, over wet grass of February showers.
Meticulously folded, the flag presented to his bride;
Almost fifty-four years she had been at his side.
Then the partings began, as his body was lowered to rest;
This was not only a man, but a man at his best.
